Tides Institute Exhibition to Feature Artists of the 1970s

from Tides Institute and Museum of Art

The second exhibition of the season,'The 70s: Art & Place at Passamaquoddy Bay' features 25 visual artists that moved to eastern Maine during that decade of the twentieth century and still call the region their home. The show will open on July 23, 2010, with a reception from 5:00 – 7:30 pm. A related concert featuring works written and performed by long-time musicians of the region, will be held beginning at 8:00 pm at a nearby venue, the Eastport Arts Center. Artists of all disciplines found their way to this downeast region from the early 20th century with the Grand Central School of Art—open in Eastport for 9 years from 1927 through 1936—through more recent times. During the decade of the 1970s, however, the region again saw a steady influx of artists seeking a more authentic, simpler and direct experience of nature away from the cities. Visual artists represented in the exhibition include: Allen Harris, Jerry Young, Elliot Fishbein, Jim Blankman, Melanie Zibit, Joseph White, Arnold Weschler, Mac Wells, Richard Van Buren, Lee Suta, Christian Sunde, Alan Shields, Elizabeth Ostrander, Dennis Oppenheim, Leatrice Linden, Richard Klyver, Barbara Kirschenstein (Barbara Toothpick), Alan Kirschenstein (Alan Horseradish), Michael Good, Mani Feniger (Terry Berger), Jane Ehrich, Judith Colemann, Leslie Dale Bowman, Brendt Berger, Bill Barrel. The exhibition will be on view through August 18. The Tides Institute is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. (from maineevents.com)
