An Evening of Romantic Music

from Milton Kidd

Feb. 18, 7:30 PM at Nordica Auditorium: An Evening of Romantic Music with Anatole Wieck (violin/viola) and Carmen Rodriguez Peralta (piano) On Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 pm, at the University of Maine Farmington in Nordica Auditorium, the Arts Institute of Western Maine will present the internationally acclaimed violin/violist Anatole Wieck and pianist Carmen Rodriguez Peralta in concert. The Juilliard trained duo bring their much-touted artistry to the stage to continue the spirit of Valentine’s Day and warm up the winter with An Evening of Romantic Music. On the program is Beethoven’s Sonata #5 in F major, the “Spring” Sonata, so named for its tuneful and graceful first movement, its lilting, flirtatious scherzo in which the piano and violin play tag, and its rapturous finish, which tumbles like a thawing brook. This is followed by a rare treat: Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, in which the lush alto voice of the viola dreamily cajoles, then sets the stage on fire. (Anatole Wieck, by the way, is not related to Clara Wieck, Schumann’s wife.) Joaquin Nin’s “En el Jardin de Lindaraxa” (“In Lindaraxa’s Garden”) is a poetic work for violin/piano describing a magical corner in the Alhambra palace in Granada. Joaquin Nin is the father of Anais Nin, the writer. Finally, we hear from that major influence in Czech music, Bedrich Smetana, with “From my Country,” a work that will tug at you with reminiscences of his orchestral “Moldau,” and whose sincere melancholic yet glorious passages have their roots in folk music. Maestro Wieck, born Latvian and Ms. Rodriguez Peralta, whose father is Peruvian will be speaking from their hearts on this. Dr. Wieck teaches violin and viola and conducts the University of Maine Chamber Orchestra. And pianist Ms. Rodriguez Peralta is chair of the Music Department at Middlesex Community College, where she also runs a chamber music program. Both artists are extremely active, performing internationally, and winning multiple awards. AIWM has a festive winter celebration of romantic music planned for you, so please bring your loved ones and join us in an event that is guaranteed to warm you to your toes!
