'Fear, Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law' presented by Maine Humanities Council

Part One, Exploring the Context, Defining the Issues will take place on October 17 at the Portland High School auditorium from 4:30-7:30pm and on October 18 at the Bangor Public Library from 9:00am-12:00noon. The program will begin with a discussion of the historical context of civil liberties under pressure by Joel Rosenthal, president of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs. The session will conclude with a panel discussion on what the current situation means for Americans.
Part Two, The View Through the Lens of Literature, will take place on November 13 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Portland Public Library and the Bangor Public Library. This session will explore fear, civil liberties and the rule of law through a scholar-facilitated discussion of Arthur Miller's The Crucible.
